LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team split a double header with ODAC-rival Hampden-Sydney College on Sunday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field. The Tigers won the first game, 14-4, but the Generals came back to win the second game, 13-4.
In game one, H-SC (12-6, 4-2) took a 3-0 lead in the third inning on a three-run homerun by junior shortstop Jay Lilley (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch). W&L (17-3, 5-1) responded by plating two runs in the bottom of the inning on a two-run double by junior shortstop Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen's Episcopal) to cut the deficit to 3-2. However, the Tigers scored one run in the fourth and five in the fifth to take a 9-2 lead en route to the 10-run victory.
In the five run fifth inning, H-SC freshman catcher Jason Bour (Centreville, Va./Westfield) smacked a two-run double to open up the floodgates.
Gosselink finished the game 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while senior third baseman Adam Bullock (Alexandria, Va./Gonzaga) went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Freshman right hander Tim Livingston (Los Angeles, Calif./Santa Monica) gave up nine runs on seven hits and struck out three over four innings to suffer his first loss of the season (3-1).
For the Tigers, Bour batted 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs and three RBI. Sophomore rightfielder John Apperson (Lynchburg, Va./Heritage) and senior second baseman Mike Clark (Kinsvale, Va./Washington-Lee) each went 3-for-5 with a double. On the mound, sophomore right hander Larry Greene (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) allowed four runs on five hits with six strikeouts over six innings to pick up the win (3-0).
In game two, the Generals jumped out to a 2-0 advantage after the first inning and scored four more in the third inning to take a 6-0 lead. In the third inning, sophomore right fielder Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights) smacked a two-run double, while sophomore designated hitter Jordan Wesley (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds) hit a two-run homerun. Wesley hit his second homerun of the game in the sixth inning and Gosselink smacked a two-run homerun in the seventh inning to give W&L a 13-0 lead.
Wesley finished 2-for-4 with a pair of homeruns and three RBI, while Garland went 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI. Freshman left hander John Parker (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence) scattered seven hits over eight shutout innings to earn the win (2-0).
Apperson, Bour and senior first baseman Joe Knowles (Lynchburg, Va./Heritage) each had two hits for the Tigers. Junior right hander Michael Hall (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) allowed six runs on six hits in 2.2 innings to take the loss (0-2).
W&L returns to the diamond on Wednesday when it hosts Roanoke. The game begins at 3:00 pm.
