LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team collected 16 hits, including three homeruns, and extended its winning streak to 12 games in a 14-7 victory over Southern Virginia on Thursday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
The Generals (14-2) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run homerun by sophomore right fielder Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights). After scoring one run in the second inning, W&L exploded for eight runs in the third inning to take an 11-0 lead. Sophomore designated hitter Jordan Wesley (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds) and junior center fielder Dave MacKenzie (Vienna, Va./James Madison) each smacked a three-run homerun in the inning.
The Generals held a 12-2 advantage after six innings, but the Knights (5-9) scored four runs in the seventh to make it a 12-6 game. Junior designated hitter Brady Decker (Herndon, Va./Oakton) hit a two-run double and senior catcher Nathan Sharp (Smithfield, Utah/Skyview) knocked in two runs with a single.
W&L replied by plating two runs in the bottom of the inning to extend the lead back to eight at 14-6. Southern Virginia got one run back in the eighth to make the final score 14-7.
Wesley and MacKenzie each went 2-for-4 with four RBI, while junior first baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) batted 4-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI and scored three runs. Senior right hander Brian Higgins (Centerville, Mass./Milton Academy) gave up one run on four hits over five innings to pick up the win (2-0).
For the Knights, Decker went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while freshman first baseman Stephen Francis (Sandy, Utah/Alta) went 2-for-5 with a homerun, an RBI and scored two runs. On the mound, junior right hander Brian Uzcategui (West Palm Beach, Fla./John I. Leonard) surrendered seven runs on five hits in 2.1 innings to take the loss (2-2).
W&L returns to the diamond on Saturday when it travels to Randolph-Macon for a double header. The first game starts at 12:00 pm.
