LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior left fielder Warren Hunter (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) hit a one-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning to drive home junior first baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) to lift the Washington and Lee baseball team past Southern Virginia, 5-4, on Tuesday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
Southern Virginia senior catcher Nate Sharp (Smithfield, Utah/Skyview) hit a two-run home run in the second inning to give the Knights (1-4) a 2-0 lead. SVU would add another run in the third and one more in the seventh to take a 4-0 advantage.
The Generals (6-2) plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit to 4-2 and tied the game at 4-4 when junior center fielder David Mackenzie (Vienna, Va./James Madison) smacked a two-run single to left field in the bottom of the eighth inning.
In the ninth inning, McConnell started the inning with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Then with one out, SVU freshman pitcher Jordan Brame (Richland, Wash./Hanford) intentionally walked the next two Generals to load the bases. Hunter then hit Brame's first pitch right up the middle to send home McConnell with the game-winning run.
At the plate, W&L was led by Mackenzie, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI and scored a run. McConnell batted 2-for-3 with a run, while sophomore right fielder Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights) went 2-for-4 and scored a pair of runs.
Freshman righthander Steve Marcott (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) allowed no runs in the final two innings to pick up the win (1-1). Freshman southpaw John Parker (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence) started for the Generals and allowed three runs, seven hits and struck out seven in four innings.
For the Knights, Brame took the loss to fall to 0-2 on the season. Junior center fielder James Schlegelmilch (Sugar City, Idaho/Sugar Salem) went 3-for-5 at the plate with an RBI. Junior left fielder Josh Thornock (Rexburg, Idaho/Madison) batted 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.
W&L returns to the diamond on Saturday when it hosts Mount Aloysius in a doubleheader. The first game starts at 12:00 pm.
