ATLANTA, Ga. -- Junior designated hitter Travis Langley went 2-for-3 with three RBI to help lead the Emory University baseball team to a 7-3 victory over Washington and Lee on Tuesday afternoon in Atlanta, Ga.
Langley's two-run single in the second inning gave the Eagles (1-0) a 3-0 lead. Emory followed with a run in the fifth, two more in the sixth, and one more in the seventh to take a 7-0 lead.
The Generals (1-1) were held in check throughout the game until the top of the eighth inning when they scored all three of their runs off junior pitcher Tom Mieczkowski. With the bases loaded and nobody out, junior shortstop Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen's Episcopal) singled to left field to drive home freshman outfielder James Madden (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park). The next two W&L batters struck out before a wild pitch allowed junior centerfielder David Mackenzie (Vienna, Va./James Madison) to cross the plate. Junior first baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) walked to load the bases and then sophomore designated hitter Phil Cossich (Belle Chasse, La./Isidore Newman) walked to score sophomore second baseman David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton).
Miller went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and scored a run. Sophomore pitcher Clayton Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) allowed eight hits and four runs over five innings to suffer the loss.
Emory's junior first baseman Sam Cunningham went 1-for-2 with two runs and an RBI. Senior pitcher Will Carr allowed just three hits over seven scoreless innings to pick up the win. Sophomore Jason Glushon pitched the final 1.1 innings to earn the save.
W&L returns to action on Thursday when it travels to Maryville College for a doubleheader. The first game starts at 1:00 pm.
