LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's basketball team went on a 6-0 run over the final 1:34 of the game to pull out a 50-45 win over Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon at the Warner Center.
The Generals (5-4, 3-3) trailed 28-27 at halftime, but went on a 14-6 run over the first 8:23 of the second stanza to take a 41-34 advantage. Junior guard Louisa Feve (Bethesda, Md./Winston Churchill) scored five of the points during the spurt and her three-pointer at the 16:05 mark gave the Generals a 34-32 lead, which was their first since the score was 23-21 with 4:13 left in the first half.
The Marlins (4-5, 3-2) closed to within 42-41 with 5:38 left on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Lauren Rector (Salem, Va./Culpeper) and took a 45-44 lead on a layup by sophomore center Nicole Thurston (Ramstein, Germany/American) with 1:34 remaining. W&L retook the lead at 46-45 with 1:29 remaining on a pair of free throws from senior guard Bethany Dannelly (Raleigh, N.C./William G. Enloe) and Feve went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe in the final 19 seconds to seal the victory.
Feve finished with a game-high 18 points and nine rebounds, while sophomore center Jessica Hunsinger (Mayer, Ariz./The Orme School) had 15 points, eight rebounds and two blocks. Freshman forward Kristen Krouchick (Holland, Pa./Nazareth Academy) tallied eight points and seven boards.
Virginia Wesleyan was led by Thurston, who had eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Michelle Dove (San Antonio, Texas/Judson) posted five points, five rebounds and collected a game-high six steals.
The Generals return to the court on Tuesday when they entertain Mary Baldwin. Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm.
