W&L Baseball Falls To Hampden-Sydney, 6-4

LYNCHBURG, Va. -Hampden-Sydney College defeated Washington and Lee, 6-4 in game six of the 2004 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Baseball Tournament on Friday evening at the Lynchburg City Stadium.

The Generals (18-15) were the first to alter the scoreboard when senior right fielder Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) connected on a two-run home run in the top of the first inning, but the Tigers (18-17-1) quickly regained the lead with three runs in the bottom of the first.

Washington and Lee tied the score at 3-3 with a run in the six inning, but Hampden-Sydney responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth for all the runs it would need on the night. The Generals managed one more run in the top of the seventh inning, but Tigers starter Jayson Hanky (5-2) held W&L to no runs in the final two innings for the complete-game victory.

Washington and Lee was led by junior catcher Zach Bausch(Vienna, Va./McLean), who was 3-for-4 with a double, one RBI and a run scored.  Freshman designated hitter David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) rounded out the Generals multiple-hit performer with a 2-for-5 showing from the plate. Mulhern's homer marked his ninth of the year and tied the school record for homeruns in a season.

Senior right hander Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) recorded nine strikeouts, but fell to 6-2 on the season after giving up 12 hits.

The Tigers were led by Chris Padgett who was 4-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Warren Poirier went 2-for-4 with the bat with a run scored while right fielder Andy Watts hit 2-for-5 with a run scored.  

The Generals return to action on Saturday when they take on Lynchburg College at 3:00 p.m.
