LYNCHBURG, Va. - Washington and Lee stranded 18 runners on base as Lynchburg swept the Generals, 6-3 and 9-6, in an ODAC baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
In game one the Hornets broke a 2-2 tie with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to score all the runs they would need on the game. Washington and Lee scored its third and final run in the top of the sixth inning as freshman right fielder Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights) led off the inning with a solo homerun to left field, but the Generals could get no closer.
Senior left hander Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) fell to 6-2 on the year with his second loss of the season after giving up 10 hits with six earned runs and three walks through six innings of work. Lynchburg junior right hander Matt Gouker (7-0) earned the complete-game victory after striking out six and holding W&L to nine hits and just one earned run.
In game two the Hornets (24-6, 11-2) jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first two innings and extended their lead to 8-2 by the end of the sixth frame. The Generals (14-9, 8-4) answered with three runs in the top of the seventh inning for their most prolific canto of the day, but couldn't get any closer as both teams added a run in the eighth inning.
Senior right hander Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) was saddled with his first loss of the season (5-1) after giving up eight hits, eight earned runs and six walks through six innings on the mound. Lynchburg senior right hander Jay Moore (8-2) notched the win after giving up 12 hits and five runs through 6.1 innings of work.
Senior short stop Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston) and sophomore second baseman Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen's Episcopal) both went 5-for-7 with one RBI to lead W&L from the plate in the doubleheader.
Senior second baseman Anthony Palmisano went 6-for-8 on the day with five RBI to lead Lynchburg on the day, while sophomore center fielder Steven Scott connected on 4-of-6 with four RBI.
The Generals return to action on Monday when they host Bridgewater for a 1:00 p.m. game.
