LEXINGTON, Va. - Senior lefty Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) threw a complete game and allowed just five hits to become Washington and Lee's all-time win leader as the Generals swept a doubleheader from Emory & Henry, 7-0 and 16-3, in ODAC baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
Dean walked off the mound after game one with his 24th career win after striking out six with just one walk to surpass Bob Weston (1996-1999) for most wins by a General.
The Generals scored runs in five of their six at bats, outhitting the Wasps, 13-5, and recording their first shutout since W&L blanked Lynchburg (8-0) on Apr. 13, 2003.
Sophomore second baseman Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen's Episcopal) led five Generals with multiple hits, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Junior catcher Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean) went 3-for-4 with two RBI, while sophomore centerfielder Dave Mackenzie (Vienna, Va./James Madison), freshman rightfielder Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights) and sophomore first baseman Taylor McConnell Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) each connected on a pair of hits.
Tommy Gilbert suffered the loss for Emory & Henry to fall to 0-1 on the season.
In the nightcap, W&L (8-3, 2-0) erupted for 21 hits, as senior righty Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) held Emory & Henry (0-8, 0-2) to three hits and no runs through seven innings of work. Kagey recorded 11 strikeouts with just three walks on the day.
Bausch continued his hot streak in the second game, connecting in 4-for-4 with three doubles, a home run and three RBI, while Garland went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Gosselink hit 3-for-5 and senior leftfielder Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) went 2-for-5 with a home run and five RBI.
Casey Burcham was saddled with the losing decision after giving up five hits and four runs in the first inning.
The Generals return to action Wednesday when they host Piedmont for a 3:00 p.m. game.
