LEXINGTON, Va. - Senior left hander Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) set the Old Dominion Athletic Conference record for wins in a career as the Generals swept Eastern Mennonite, 4-0 and 5-0, on Saturday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
In the opening game, Dean upped his record to 6-0 on the season, giving up six hits with four strikeouts for his fourth complete game and second shutout of the year. The decision marks his 26th career win (26-5), giving him the most wins ever by an ODAC pitcher.
Washington and Lee held a narrow 1-0 lead entering the bottom of the fifth, but scored two more before the inning was over and added another run in the sixth frame for its second shutout of the spring. Sophomore second baseman Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen's Episcopal) led W&L with a 2-for-3 performance from the plate with an RBI and one run scored, while senior left fielder Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Junior right hander Kevin Forry (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) suffered the loss for the Royals after giving up nine hits in six innings of work.
In game two the Generals (13-5, 7-0) again held a narrow 1-0 lead, before freshman right fielder Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights) led off the bottom of the seventh inning with his second home run of the season and sparked a four-run rally for W&L.
Kagey (4-0) held the Royals (9-12, 2-2) to just three hits while fanning six and recording his first shutout and first complete game of the year.
Garland went 2-for-3 from the plate with one RBI and one run scored, while freshman designated hitter David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) connected on 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Junior right hander Ethan Hilliard (Luray, Va./Mt. Carmel Christian) recorded the loss for EMU, giving up six hits in 6.2 innings on the mound.
The Generals return to action Wednesday when they travel to Bridgewater for a 3:00 p.m. game.
