W&L Baseball Falls At Shenandoah, 7-2

WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah freshman right hander Keith Fritz allowed just two runs on five hits in six innings of work as the Hornets defeated Washington and Lee, 7-2, in non-conference baseball action on Thursday afternoon.

Shenandoah (11-10) scored one run in each of the first three innings, one run in the fifth and three in the eighth to pick up its third straight victory.

The Generals (11-5) dented the scoreboard in the sixth inning as senior shortstop Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston) led off the frame with a single to center, sophomore second baseman Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen's Episcopal) then connected on a double to left field that advanced Allain to third base and senior right fielder Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) brought both runners home with a single to right field.

Junior catcher Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean) went 2-for-4 and Allain went 2-for-3 to lead W&L from the plate, while senior right hander Mike Wert (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) suffered the loss (2-3) after giving up nine hits and four runs in five innings of work.

Sophomore right hander Gerry Sasse held the Generals scoreless with five strikeouts in the final three innings to record the save. Senior right fielder Josh Bosley, sophomore shortstop David Jenkins, sophomore second baseman Adam Kuchemba and freshman designated hitter Jeremy Mason each connected on a pair of hits for the Hornets.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it hosts a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader with Eastern Mennonite.
