LEXINGTON, Va. - Senior left hander Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) tied the Old Dominion Athletic Conference record for wins in a career as the Generals swept a doubleheader from Randolph-Macon, 5-1 and 11-1, on Saturday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
In the opening game Dean upped his record to 5-0 on the season, giving up just two hits with three strikeouts while recording his third complete game of the year. The decision marks his 25th career win, tying him with Virginia Wesleyan hurlers Brian Corbo (1998-01) and Billy Kachuba (1993-96) for the most wins by an ODAC pitcher.
Washington and Lee scored three runs in the bottom of the second for all the runs it would need in the game. Sophomore first baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) led off the inning with a walk before senior left fielder Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) connected on a double to left that moved both Generals into scoring position. Following a strikeout by junior third baseman Adam Bullock (Alexandria, Va./Gonzaga), senior shortstop Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston) drove a double to left field, scoring McConnell and Kagey. Allain finished off the second-frame scoring when he crossed home plate compliments of a single by sophomore second baseman Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen's Episcopal).
W&L added a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings and the Yellow Jackets scored their lone run in the fifth.
Allain went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Gosselink went 2-for-3 with one RBI to lead the Generals' offense in outhitting R-MC, 7-2.
In game two Kagey allowed six hits and no runs, while striking out six through eight innings of work. Freshman designated hitter David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) led W&L (10-4, 4-0) with a 3-for-4 showing from the plate, while Gosselink, McConnell and senior right fielder Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) each recorded a pair of hits.
Sophomore first baseman Tim Hodges (Courtland, Va./Southampton) went 3-for-3 to lead R-Mc (5-10, 0-2) while junior right hander Chris Murray (Rockville, Md.Wootton) gave up nine hits and seven runs in 4.1 innings of work for the loss.
The Generals return to action Wednesday when they host Roanoke for a 3:00 p.m. game.
