LEXINGTON, Va. -- Ninth-ranked Washington and Lee opened its 2004 season with a 21-2 win over Lynchburg in ODAC women's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at the W&L lacrosse stadium.
The Generals (1-0, 1-0) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the game's first 10 minutes and never looked back in claiming the 19-goal victory.
W&L was led by senior attacker Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) and freshman midfielders Kelly Evans (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) and Mallory Lobisser (Bainbridge Island, Wash./Lakeside), who tallied three goals each. Junior midfielder Kristen Brown (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) and freshman midfielder Lane Earnest (Preston, Md./Easton) each added two goals and one assist. Senior Joanna Perini (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) and freshman Laura Hornbuckle (Houston, Texas/St. John's) each played in goal for the Generals, combining for seven saves.
Lynchburg (0-1, 0-1) was led by junior midfielder Kim Hamblen (Vienna, Va./James Madison) and junior attacker Rachel Bauer (Clifton, Va./Centreville), who each scored one goal. Freshman defender Hayley Engster (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) assisted on Hamblen's tally. Freshman Ji-Young Eun (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) played all 60 minutes in goal for the Hornets, posting nine saves.
The Generals held a 35-15 advantage on shots and forced 26 Lynchburg turnovers in the contest.
W&L returns to action on Saturday as it travels to St. Mary's (Md.) for a 1:00 pm contest.
