LEXINGTON, Va. - Senior first baseman Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI as Washington and Lee defeated Southern Virginia, 10-4, on Wednesday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
Leading 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning with two outs and the bases loaded, W&L (4-2) pushed its lead to 6-1 as Mulhern cleared the bases with a double to left.
The Generals scored three more runs in the fifth to push their lead to 9-1, before the Knights (2-4) notched a pair of runs in the seventh and one in the eighth.
W&L finished the afternoon's scoring as sophomore second baseman Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen's Episcopal) connected on a two-out triple to right center and Mulhern drove him in with a single to right field.
Gosselink finished the day 3-for-4 with his triple and three runs scored, while senior shortstop Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston) went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Senior hurler Mike Wert (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) recorded his second win of the season, giving up eight hits through six innings of work.
The Knights were paced by first baseman Travis Evans (Sugar City, Idaho) and left fielder Shaun Snowden (Smith Falls, Ontario). Evans went 2-for-3 with a home run and an RBI, while Snowden connected on 2-of-3 from the plate.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Sunday when it hosts Mount Aloysius for a doubleheader which is set to begin at 12:00 p.m.
