CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Citadel went on a 10-2 run to close out the game to defeat Washington and Lee, 73-62, in men's basketball action on Tuesday night in Charleston, S.C.
The Generals (0-3) led 49-47 with 8:41 remaining in the game but the Bulldogs (2-0) went on a 10-2 spurt to take a 10 point lead at 61-51 with 3:52 left. Washington and Lee pulled to within three at 63-60 with 1:53 remaining but The Citadel went on the aforementioned 10-2 spurt to win 73-62.
Washington and Lee hit 45% (13-for-29) of its shots from the field in the second half to stay close to the Bulldogs, but The Citadel went 16-for-25 from the free throw line in the second half while the Generals were just 2-for-2.
Washington and Lee was led by sophomore guard Chris Halkitis (New Port Richey, Fla./Ridgewood), who scored a team-high 13 points while junior forward David Will (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) had 12 points and nine rebounds. Freshman forward Greg Bienemann (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) finished the game with 12 points and four rebounds.
The Bulldogs got 13 points and seven rebounds from Warren McLendon while Matt Davis recorded 10 points, nine rebounds, and five assists.
The Generals return to the court on Saturday when they open their home schedule against Emory University. Tip-off is set for 2:00 pm.
