W&L Baseball Falls, 5-1, To Southern Virginia

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Southern Virginia freshman righthander Brian Rudd (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) threw a complete game, allowing six hits and one walk while inducing five double plays, to earn a 5-1 win over Washington and Lee in non-conference baseball action on Thursday at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.

The Knights (4-16) got on the board in the top of the first inning as freshman second baseman Paul Lawrence (Centerville, Utah) led the game off with a home run to rightfield. SVU, which outhit W&L 14-6, later added two runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and capped its scoring in the top of the ninth on senior designated hitter B.J. Hanley's (Westminster, Md.) solo shot to right.

The Generals (21-4) mustered their only offense in the bottom of the eighth inning when junior rightfielder Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) led off with a single. After sophomore catcher Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean) doubled to put runners on second and third, freshman third baseman Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen's Episcopal) reached on an error to plate Mulhern.

Junior righthander Mike Wert (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) allowed four runs on nine hits in six innings on the mound to fall to 4-1 on the season.

The Generals will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Guilford for a doubleheader which is set to begin at 12:00 p.m.
