LEXINGTON, Va. -- The eighth-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 5-1 first-half advantage and defeated No. 20 Randolph-Macon, 13-7, on Sunday at the W&L Turf Field.
Junior midfielder Lee Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) scored the first of her four goals at the 1:18 mark to give the Generals (9-1, 5-0 ODAC) a quick 1-0 edge. Then, after senior midfielder Mandy Dougherty (Lutherville, Md./Garrison Forest) tallied to even the contest at 1-1, W&L scored the next four goals to assume a 5-1 lead.
In the second stanza, goals by junior midfielder Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) and sophomore midfielder Kitt Murphy (Richmond, Va./St. Catherines) extended the Generals' 8-4 halftime advantage to 10-4. The Yellow Jackets (8-4, 5-1 ODAC), who were outshot 34-15 for the game, were never able to cut their deficit to less than five the rest of the way.
Wheeler's four goals were a team-high, while Taffe added three goals and two assists. Murphy and position- and classmate Natalya Hoobchaak (Barrington, Ill./Loyola Academy) totaled two goals apiece for the Generals, who won their ninth consecutive game.
Dougherty's four goals, two of which were scored off free-position shots, paced the Yellow Jackets. Sophomore attacker Kelly Jaeger (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) added one goal and two assists.
In goal, W&L junior Joanna Perini (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) totaled five saves to pick up the win. Her counterpart, junior Ashley Seal (Richmond, Va./Collegiate), registered 15 stops.
The Generals will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Sweet Briar for a 4:00 pm contest.
