LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team swept a doubleheader from Hampden-Sydney on Saturday at Cap'n Dick Smith Field. The Generals won the first game 12-1 and the second 6-2.
Ahead 2-0, the Generals added five runs in the bottom of the third to take a 7-0 advantage over the Tigers in Game 1. W&L then added one, two and two runs apiece in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings respectively, as it took advantage of five Tigers' errors.
Junior pitcher Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) went all seven innings for the Generals, allowing four hits and one run. He surrendered two walks and struck out six, improving to 2-1 on the season. H-SC senior pitcher Ben Fry (Salem, Va./Salem) was tagged with the loss after allowing seven runs (five earned) on seven hits in 2.2 innings of work. He falls to 0-3 on the season.
Hampden-Sydney (1-7, 0-2 ODAC) took a 2-1 lead in the third inning of the second game when junior catcher Ty LaFlame (Richmond, Va./Atlee) doubled home sophomore second baseman Mike Clark (Kinsale, Va./Washington & Lee).
However, the Generals (6-2, 3-1 ODAC) bounced back with a three-run fourth inning. Freshman catcher Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean) led off with a home run to left-center and senior shortstop Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) plated Bullock with a fielder's choice. He then stole the 40th base of his career, tying the W&L career mark, and scored on junior second baseman Austin Allain's (Weston, Mass./Weston) single.
W&L added a run apiece in the sixth and eighth inning to give junior pitcher Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) some breathing room. Kagey (2-1) went eight innings to pick up the win, allowing two runs on six hits. He walked three and had nine strike outs. Sophomore Jerry Shank (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) got the loss for the Tigers after giving up four runs (two earned) in four innings. He is now 0-2 on the season.
Offensively, W&L was powered by senior first baseman Brian Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep), who went 7-for-9 with four RBI on the day. Bausch had three hits in four at-bats, three runs, and two RBI.
Clark was 1-for-3 with an RBI in the first game, and 2-for-4 in the second to lead the Tigers. Junior shortstop Josh Walton (Salem, Va./Salem) totaled three hits in seven at-bats.
The Generals are in action again tomorrow afternoon when they host Division II-West Virginia Tech for a doubleheader which gets underway at 12:00 pm.
