FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team used a five-run fourth inning to defeat Mary Washington, 9-2, on Tuesday afternoon.
The Eagles scored first as shortstop Matt Lemire scored on an RBI single by first baseman Jay Quintana in the third inning.
The Generals then broke the game open in the fourth inning. Junior leftfielder Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) and junior second baseman Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston) both recorded RBI singles, while senior shortstop Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) served a two-run single. Sophomore catcher Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean) also notched an RBI double in the inning.
W&L added three more runs in the top of the sixth inning as junior catcher Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Uniontown) hit a bases loaded, bases-clearing double to left field.
Junior pitcher Mike Wert (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) earned his first win of the season, allowing two runs over seven innings of work. He surrendered seven hits, striking out six batters with two walks.
Hanson led W&L at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two RBI. Allain also collected three hits in six at-bats, while Kagey and Bausch both posted two hits on the afternoon.
Andrew Lawson took the loss for MWC, surrendering six earned runs over four innings. Quintana led the Eagle offense with three hits in four at-bats.
Washington and Lee will return to action on Saturday as it hosts Hampden-Sydney for a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 12:00 pm.
