LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior midfielder Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) scored a game-winning goal to break a 9-9 deadlock with nine seconds remaining to lift thirteenth-ranked Washington and Lee to a 10-9 victory over eighth-ranked Mary Washington in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Saturday in Fredericksburg, Va.

The Eagles (2-2) roared out of the gates to take a 7-2 lead at the halftime break. However, the Generals responded with six unanswered goals at the start of the second half, including four from Taffe, to take an 8-7 lead at the 47:52 mark.

Successive goals from MWC sophomore attacker Britt Gottlieb and senior midfielder Kami McNinch put the Eagles back on top with their final lead of the game, 9-8.

But W&L (4-1) wouldn't go away. Freshman attacker Amanda Strickler (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) evened the score at 9-9 with a goal with 26 seconds remaining. Then, after losing the draw control, W&L junior defender Sara Jurkowsky (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) caused a turnover and helped advance the ball to the Generals' end, where Taffe fired the game-winner.

Taffe led the way for the Generals, recording five goals, all of which came in the second half, and one assist. Senior attacker Leslie Bogart (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) totaled three points on one goal and two assists, while sophomore midfielder Natalya Hoobchaak (Barrington, Ill./Loyola Academy) had two goals and an assist.

Junior attacker Kate Clute had two goals and three assists to pace the Eagles. Gottlieb and sophomore midfielder Erica Larsen each had two goals and one assist.

W&L junior Joanna Perini (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) logged 60 minutes in the Generals' net, making 22 stops to pick up the win.

The Generals return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Lynchburg for a 4:00 pm contest.
