ASHLAND, Va. -- The second-seeded Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team advanced to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament Championship with an 8-4 victory over third-seeded Roanoke in semifinal action in Ashland, Va. on Saturday afternoon.
The Generals will square off against top-seeded Randolph-Macon at 2:00 pm on Sunday afternoon in the ODAC Championship. The Yellow Jackets defeated fifth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan, 14-8, in Saturday's first semifinal game. The winner of Sunday's ODAC Championship will receive the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
W&L (11-4) assumed a 5-1 halftime advantage against the Maroons today as sophomore midfielders Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) and Lee Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) registered two goals each. Senior midfielder Emily Owens (Waco, Texas/Episcopal) netted W&L's other first half goal.
The Generals tacked on three insurance goals in the second half, including Taffe's third of the contest and two from junior attacker Leslie Bogart (Wilton, Conn./Wilton).
Taffe finished the game with three goals, while Wheeler and Bogart netted two apiece. Sophomore Joanna Perini (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) was spectacular in goal as she posted 18 saves.
Roanoke (11-6) freshman attacker Steph Calabrese (Darien, Conn./Darien) scored a pair of goals and assisted on one, while senior midfielder Leslie Hunt (Baltimore, Md./Towson) contrinuted two goals. Freshman Koehl Robinson (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Episcopal) and junior Lisa Humphries (Glasgow, Va./Rockbridge County) combined to stop 10 shots between the pipes.
The Generals outshot Roanoke, 26-23 for the game.
