W&L Baseball Defeats Roanoke, 14-0

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee sophomore Mike Wert (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) pitched a complete game, five-hit shutout to lead the Generals to a 14-0 victory over Roanoke in baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Smith Field. Wert struck out 10 with no walks.

The Generals, who scored at least one run in all but one inning, were aided by six Maroon errors. W&L recorded 16 hits off three different Roanoke pitchers and had 10 different players drive in at least one run.

Junior shortstop Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) led the Generals offensive attack by going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and one RBI. In addition, Hanson drew a pair of walks and stole three bases. Sophomore leftfielder Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) finished the afternoon 3-for-4 at the plate and drove in two, while sophomore catcher Andrew Riffee (St. Albans, W. Va./Nitro) went 2-for-2 and scored two runs.

Roanoke sophomore John Rutledge (Abingdon, Va./Abingdon) pitched five innings and took the loss. He allowed six runs, three earned, struck out three and walked five.

The Generals return to action when they host non-conference opponent Southern Virginia on Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 pm.
