W&L Women's Lacrosse Earns Key Victory over Roanoke, 8-7

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee sophomore midfielder Lee Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) scored two goals and assisted on two others to lead the Generals to an 8-7 victory over Roanoke on Thursday afternoon in ODAC women's lacrosse action at the Liberty Hall Fields.

Roanoke assumed an early 1-0 lead as senior midfielder Leslie Hunt (Baltimore, Md./Towson) scored one minute into the game. The Generals responded with two goals in less than a minute to claim a 2-1 advantage. Wheeler scored W&L's first goal at the 20:28 mark, while freshman midfielder Kitt Murphy (Richmond, Va./St. Catherines) tallied at the 19:48 mark off an assist from junior attacker Leslie Bogart (Wilton, Conn./Wilton).

Following another goal by Hunt with 18:09 to play in the first half, the Generals scored three unanswered goals to claim a 5-2 lead at halftime. Bogart, Murphy and senior defender Julie Carskadon (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) recorded the goals for W&L, while Wheeler assisted on two of the scores.

Wheeler scored her second goal of the contest just 45 seconds into the second half to provide the Generals with a four-goal advantage (6-2). Following a Maroon tally, senior midfielder Emily Owens (Waco, Texas/Episcopal) netted a goal to give the Generals their second four-goal cushion (7-3) with 21:52 to play. However, Roanoke would go on to score three straight goals over the next four minutes to cut its deficit to 7-6 with 16:46 remaining.

W&L sophomore midfielder Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) scored with 11:09 left to extend her team's lead to 8-6 and Roanoke freshman midfielder Emily Hearn (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) scored at the 3:31 mark to provide the final outcome.

In addition to Wheeler's offensive output, Bogart finished with one goal and two assists, while Murphy notched two goals. Bogart's two assists give her 31 for the season, which breaks her own W&L single-season record of 30 set during the 2000 season. Sophomore Joanna Perini (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) posted six saves in goal.

The Maroons (10-5, 6-2) were led by freshman attacker Steph Calabrese (Darien, Conn./Darien) who totaled five points on two goals and three assists. Hearn and Hunt each tallied two goals, while freshman Koehl Robinson (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Episcopal) registered six saves in net.
