LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Lynchburg's Blair Hayden tossed a complete-game, three-hitter to lead the Hornets to a 3-0 victory over Washington and Lee in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader at Fox Field. In game two, the Hornets struck for four runs in the first inning and held on for a 4-3 victory to complete the sweep.
In the opener, Lynchburg (19-13, 7-7) assumed a 1-0 lead after the first inning on an RBI double from designated hitter Colin Smith. The Hornets tacked two on two more runs in the fifth inning to aid Hayden's cause. Hayden finished the game with five strikeouts and three walks.
W&L junior shortstop Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy), junior first baseman Brian Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) and sophomore rightfielder Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) each registered one hit in the opener. Sophomore Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) took the loss as he fired six innings, allowing three runs, while striking out four and walking four.
In game two, the Generals (12-11-1, 5-8-1) assumed an early 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning on an RBI double from Gladysz. Lynchburg responded with four runs in the bottom of the first to grab a 4-1 lead. The Hornets rapped four hits in the inning and were also aided by a W&L error and a balk.
W&L cut its deficit to 4-2 in the third as senior catcher Todd Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephens) laced an RBI double. Senior third baseman Matt Kozora (Ellicott City, Md./Glenelg) added a seventh inning RBI groundout to cut the Generals' deficit to 4-3, however, W&L could not score the tying run. Lynchburg's Mike Ranson earned the win in game two, while Nick Beyer earned his third save of the season.
Hanson and Mulhern each recorded two hits in the second game, while Hanson scored all three W&L runs. Sophomore Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) took the loss. He pitched six innings, allowing four runs, three earned, while striking out four and walking four.
The Generals return to action when they play at St. Mary's (Md.) Sunday afternoon. The game is slated to begin at 12:00 pm.
