LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team scored eight runs in the first-inning and held on for a 13-10 victory over Villa Julie on Smith Field Thursday afternoon.
Junior shortstop Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) began the inning with a double and advanced to third on a single by junior centerfielder Bobby Littlehale (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook). Hanson and Littlehale would score two batters later as sophomore rightfielder Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) delivered a single. However, Mulhern was out at second as he tried to advance on the throw. Sophomore leftfielder Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) followed with a double that plated two runs to make it 4-0. After junior designated hitter Kyle Droppers (Dallas, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) was hit by a pitch, sophomore second baseman Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston) recorded two runs batted in with a double. Allain would later score the eighth run of the inning as he and Hanson executed a double steal.

After Villa Julie tacked on two more runs in the fifth to cut the W&L lead to 9-4, the Generals responded with three runs in the sixth to assume a 12-4 advantage. W&L pieced together four consecutive singles from Mulhern, Gladysz, Gosselink and Kagey for its three runs.
However, the Mustangs charged back with two runs of their own to trail 12-6. Welling led off with a home run to left center field, while junior rightfielder Robert Arnold tallied an RBI single. After an eighth-inning sacrifice fly from Gosselink, the Mustangs plated four runs in the ninth to provide the final margin.
For the game, Hanson, Mulhern and Kagey each went 3-for-5, while Kagey drove in four runs. Hanson and Mulhern each scored a pair of runs.
