W&L Women's Lacrosse Defeats Denison, 18-8

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee sophomore midfielder Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) tallied four goals and two assists to help lead the Generals to an 18-8 victory over Denison in women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon on the Liberty Hall Fields.

The Generals grabbed the lead for good (3-2) at the 11:48 mark of the first half as Taffe scored her second goal of the contest off an assist from freshman midfielder Maggie Speasmaker (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's). W&L then outscored the Big Red, 5-2 over the remainder of the first half to claim an 8-4 halftime advantage. Junior attacker Leslie Bogart (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) notched one goal and three assists during the run.

W&L would extend its halftime advantage to 12-4 at the 17:57 mark by scoring the first four goals of the second half. Taffe and senior defender Julie Carskadon (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) each registered a goal and an assist during that span. After a Denison tally made the score 12-5, the Generals rattled off three straight goals, including a pair of tallies by sophomore attacker Stephanie Haldy (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Agnes Irwin) to assume a 15-5 lead.

In addition to Taffe's offensive output, Bogart added two goals and three assists, while sophomore midfielder Lee Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) chipped in with three goals and one assist. Carskadon notched two goals and one assist and Haldy added a pair of scores. Sophomore Joanna Perini (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) registered nine saves between the pipes.

For Denison, senior attacker Bridget Curley (Summitt, N.J./Summitt) recorded four goals. Junior goalkeeper Abbe Stewart (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) stopped 10 shots.

The victory improved W&L to 5-3 overall, while Denison slipped to 1-4.

The Generals return to action when they travel to Bridgewater on Wednesday for a 4:00 pm contest.
