NORFOLK, Va. -- Virginia Wesleyan rightfielder John Kreiser hit a two-run home run in the sixth innning to lift the Marlins to a 4-3 victory over Washington and Lee in game two of Saturday afternoon's doubleheader at Marlins Field. Kreiser's home run helped the Marlins earn a sweep of the twinbill as they were victorious in the first game, 13-1.
In the opener, Virginia Wesleyan's Derrick Rawlings pitched a six-hit, complete game to lead the Marlins. Rawlings walked just one batter and struck out five.
The Marlins (16-12, 7-2) pounded four W&L pitchers for 13 runs on 16 hits in game one. Second baseman Danny Rosendale was 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBI. Four other Marlins collected two hits in the opener, while designated hitter John Kasiski and third baseman Brandon Hill drove in two runs apiece.
In the second game, the Marlins scored first as they put two tallies on the board in the third inning. Kasiski delievered an RBI triple and scored when centerfielder Jeff Buter hit a sacrifice fly. The Generals responded to tie the game at 2-2 in the fourth as sophomore second baseman Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston) drove in a pair with a single.
W&L (10-9-1, 5-6-1) assumed its first lead of the afternoon (4-3) as senior catcher Todd Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephens) served a fifth inning RBI single that scored junior centerfielder Bobby Littlehale (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook). That set up Kreiser's sixth inning heroics.
Junior Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) pitched all six innings in the second contest and took the loss. He allowed eight hits, three earned runs and struck out three.
Gosselink led the Generals at the plate as he finished the two games a combined 4-for-6 with one RBI. Junior first baseman Brian Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) went 3-for-7 in the two games, while senior third baseman Matt Kozora (Ellicott City, Md./Glenelg) delivered W&L's lone RBI in the opener.
The Generals return to action when they host Roanoke on Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 pm.
