W&L Baseball Plays Bridgewater To 2-2 Tie In 11 Innings

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team played to an 11-inning, 2-2 deadlock against Bridgewater at Jopson Field on Thursday afternoon. The game was called after 11-innings of play due to darkness.

It marks the first tie for the W&L baseball squad since a 10-10 game against West Virginia Tech during the 1996 season.

W&L (10-7-1, 5-4-1) tallied two scores in the first inning as junior shortstop Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) began the game with a double. He moved to third two batters later when senior third baseman Matt Kozora (Ellicott City, Md./Glenelg) flied out to right and scored on a two-out single from junior first baseman Brian Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep). Gladysz would score two batters later as senior catcher Todd Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephens) recorded an RBI single.

The Eagles (6-11-1, 3-0-1) cut their deficit in half with an unearned run in the first and tied the game on a fifth-inning RBI groundout by Ryan McQueen.

W&L sophomore Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) pitched nine innings, allowing one earned run on nine hits. He struck out five and walked two batters. Hanson pitched the final two innings, striking out three.

Chris Nall pitched the first seven innings for the Eagles, surrendering two runs on six hits. He walked five and struck out four. Dustin Jones fired the final four innings, allowing one-hit and registering two strikeouts.

Hanson, Gladysz and Gosselink all finished 2-for-5 at the plate for W&L, which stranded eight baserunners. The Eagles, who left 12 on the basepaths, were led at the plate by Shaun Brinkley, who went 3-for-5, while McQueen stole three bases.

The Generals return to action when they travel to Virginia Wesleyan for a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. Game one is slated to begin at 12:00 pm.
