W&L Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Eastern Mennonite

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee sophomore second baseman Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston) executed a squeeze bunt that scored sophomore catcher Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) in the bottom of the eighth to lift the Generals to a 3-2 victory over Eastern Mennonite in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Smith Field. The Royals won game one, 2-1.

In the second game, the Generals grabbed a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the third inning on an RBI doubles from junior centerfielder Bobby Littlehale (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook) and junior first baseman Brian Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep).

The Royals were held scoreless by W&L sophomore pitcher Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) until senior catcher Erik Kratz (Telford, Pa./Christopher Dock) laced a two-out, two-run double to left field in the seventh inning to tie the score at 2-2.

Kagey fired seven innings, allowing two runs on eight hits to go along with five strikeouts. Junior Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) pitched one inning of scorless relief to earn his first victory of the season.

In the opener, EMU sophomore Ethan Hilliard (Luray, Va./Mount Carmel Christian Academy) limited the Generals to one run on four hits over six innings to earn the victory. Sophomore Chris Flynn (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) pitched a scoreless seventh to tally his third save of the season.

The Royals (16-6, 2-3), who were aided by two W&L errors in the first game, received a fourth-inning RBI single from sophomore shortstop Matt Lewellen (Grafton, Va./Grafton) which proved to be the game-winner. Hanson belted his third home run of the season in the sixth inning for W&L's lone run. Sophomore Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) picked up the loss despite going the distance and allowing only one earned run on five hits.

Kratz led the Royals at the plate, going a combined 4-for-7 with two runs batted in. Kagey finished the afternoon 4-for-7, while Gladysz went 3-for-7 with a run batted in.

The Generals (10-7, 5-4) return to action when they travel to Bridgewater for a game at 3:00 pm on Tuesday afternoon.
