LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team slipped to 9-6 overall, 4-3 in the ODAC, with a 7-4 loss to Bridgewater on Thursday afternoon at Smith Field.
After both teams tallied single runs in the first inning, the Eagles added a tally in the third to take a 2-1 lead. However, the Generals responded with two runs in the bottom of the third to claim a 3-2 advantage. Sophomore rightfielder Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, while senior catcher Todd Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephens) recorded an RBI single.
The Eagles (3-10, 1-0) tacked on four runs over the next three innings to claim a 6-3 lead after six innings. Junior shortstop Ryan McQueen (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun County) and senior second baseman Jamie Lawhorne (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance) each tallied an RBI during the span.
Lawhorne provided Bridgewater with a 7-3 advantage as he clubbed a ninth-inning home run to left center field. W&L junior shortstop Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) drove in the Generals final run with an RBI groundout in the ninth.
Bridgewater sophomore Dan Proctor (North Richland Hills, Texas/East Pennsboro) pitched seven innings, allowing six hits and three runs to earn his first victory of the season. Proctor, who was aided by three Eagle double plays, surrendered just one earn run. Sophomore Dustin Jones (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro) pitched the ninth-inning to earn his first save of the season. Lawhorne finished the afternoon 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and two runs scored, while sophomore first baseman J.R. Estes (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro) went 2-for-3 and drove in one run.
W&L (9-6, 4-3) sophomore Mike Wert (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) took the loss and fell to 1-3 as he pitched five innings. He gave up five runs, two earned, and struck out seven. Junior first baseman Brian Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkely Prep) and sophomore designated hitter Paul Sibley (St. Petersburg, Fla./Shorecrest Prep) both finished 2-for-4 at the plate. Mulhern went hitless for the game, however, drove in a pair of runs.
The Generals return to action when they host Eastern Mennonite for a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm on Saturday.
