ST. MARY'S CITY, Md.. -- Thirteenth-ranked St. Mary's (Md.) sophomore midfielder Carol Schmoeller (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) tallied four goals to help lead the Seahawks to a 9-5 victory over 14th-ranked Washington and Lee in women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon.
The Seahawks (2-0) assumed a 3-0 lead with 14:07 remaining in the first half as Schmoeller scored a pair of goals and sophomore midfielder Meg McFall (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) notched one goal. Sophomore midfielder Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) cut the W&L deficit to 3-1 with 10:57 left in the first half as she tallied her sixth goal of the season. However, the Seahawks made it a three-goal game just 37 seconds later as freshman midfielder Sarah Sloane (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) tallied her fourth goal of the season.
St. Mary's extended its lead to 5-1 as Schmoeller tallied her third goal of the half with 4:56 to play. W&L again cut its deficit to two goals (5-3) on goals from sophomore midfielder Lee Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) and senior attacker Emily Owens (Waco, Texas/Episcopal). However, Schmoeller registered her fourth goal of the first half with 34 seconds remaining to give the Seahawks a 6-3 lead at the break.
The Seahawks gained a 7-3 lead with 15:46 left in the game on a tally from senior midfielder Kathy Holmes (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air). The Generals once again cut the lead to three goals (7-4) on a score from senior defender Julie Carskadon (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown). However, Seahawk sophomore midfielder Stacy Mann (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) tallied two goals in a three-minute span to seal victory. W&L freshman midfielder Kitt Murphy (Richmond, Va./St. Catherines) notched the Generals final goal of the game off an assist from junior attacker Leslie Bogart (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) with 7:25 to play.
W&L (1-1) sophomore goalkeeper Joanna Perini (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) recorded 13 saves in the net, while Seahawk sophomore Jen Chumley (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) tallied seven saves.
The Generals return to action when they host Guilford for a 12:00 pm game next Saturday.
