LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior forward Scott Hettermann (Falls Church, Va./Landon) recorded 19 points, 10 rebounds and three assists to help lead Washington and Lee past Mary Washington, 61-53, in men's basketball action on Thursday evening at the Warner Center.
The Generals (7-15), who had a season-low eight turnovers, began the game on a 14-2 run and led by five points (28-23) at the break. However, the Eagles used a 16-2 run midway through the second half to assume a 46-39 advantage with 10:13 remaining in the game. At that point, W&L surged on a 17-3 run over the next eight minutes to assume a 56-49 lead with 2:04 remaining and held on for the eight-point win.
Freshman forward Mike Stuart (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) was the only other W&L player in double figures with 17 points. Sophomore guard Michael Denbow (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier) recorded a career-high nine assists and just one turnover.
Mary Washington (7-14) was paced by junior guard Cris Hairston (Bassett, Va./Bassett) and junior forward Dan Dupras (Vienna, Va./Marshall), who each tallied 13 points.
Washington and Lee will be in action again on Saturday evening as it travels to Eastern Mennonite for a 7:00 pm contest.
