W&L Men's Basketball Wins Southern Tip-Off Tournament

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's basketball team claimed the championship of the W&L Southern Tip-off Tournament with an 87-72 win over Washington College on Saturday afternoon at the Warner Center. With the win, the Generals improved to 2-0 for the first time since the 1989-90 season.

W&L jumped out to a 44-20 halftime advantage and led 60-31 with 14:08 remaining in the game. However, with the Generals leading 67-48 and 9:00 left, the Shoremen mounted a rally that would pull them to within four points (69-65) with 5:21 remaining in the game. Sophomore guard Andrew Gentile (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Lenape) hit three, three-pointers during the run for the Shoremen.

The Generals regrouped following the run and hit 12-of-14 free throws down the stretch to claim the 15-point win.

Senior forward Scott Hettermann (Falls Church, Va./Landon) earned tournament MVP honors after leading W&L with 21 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. Sophomore guard Ian McClure (Louisville, Ky./DuPont Manual) was also named to the all-tournament team after tallying 18 points and seven boards. Junior forward Hamill Jones (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) recorded 13 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore guard Mike Stuart (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) notched 13 points.

Gentile and junior guard David Horvath (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) earned all-tournament team honors for Washington College (1-1). Gentile registered 20 points and was 5-of-5 from three-point range, while Horvath scored a game-high 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the floor.

In the consolation game, Averett University (1-1) defeated Daniel Webster, 75-64. The Cougars were led by sophomore forward Jerrod Harris (Danville, Va./George Washington), who scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Senior guard Andre Gills (Lynchburg, Va./Heritage) was named to the all-tournament team after tallying 17 points.

Daniel Webster (0-2) was paced by junior guard Mike Maggiacomo's (Nashua, N.H./Nashua) 17 points. He was also named to the all-tournament team.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Division I Davidson for a 3:00 pm matchup with the Wildcats.
