W&L Women's Soccer Downs Greensboro, 2-0, In NCAA Tournament

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee pushed its unbeaten streak to 20-straight with a 2-0 win over Greensboro in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament at the Liberty Hall Fields on Wednesday afternoon.

The Generals (17-1-3) took a 1-0 lead just 9:45 into the match as junior forward Fontaine Marcoux (Washington, D.C./Potomac School) took a feed from sophomore forward Maggie Hope (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) and found the back of the net.

Neither team could manage much offense on the muddy pitch until junior midfielder Heather Coleman (Blackwood, N.J./Triton Regional) headed in a flip throw-in by senior midfielder Jenny Thomas (High Point, N.C./Central) at the 80:47 mark to provide the final margin.

Sophomore goaltender Emily Barker (Clifton, Va./Mount Vernon) played a majority of the time in goal (87:50) for the Generals, posting one save. Senior goaltender Adrienne Buttino (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz) notched four saves in goal for the Pride (10-10).

With the win, W&L advances to the South Region Semifinal where it will face tournament-host University of Texas-Dallas on Saturday at 7:30 pm CST in Dallas, Texas. Should the Generals win, they would play on Sunday at 5:00 pm CST.
