Stuart Leads Generals to Overtime Victory over Eastern Mennonite, 76-73

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Freshman forward Mike Stuart (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) scored a career-high 33 points to lead Washington and Lee to a 76-73 overtime win over Eastern Mennonite in ODAC men's basketball action on Wednesday evening at the Warner Center.

Stuart was 11-of-16 from the floor and 7-of-10 from three-point range. His seven three-pointers tied the school record for triples in a game, a record held by three others. His 33 points are the most scored by a W&L player since Cam Dyer tallied 41 points against Randolph-Macon on Jan. 13, 1996.

W&L (4-7, 2-4) led 36-23 at the half, however, the Royals outscored the Generals 11-2 over the first 2:44 of the second half to cut the lead to two points (38-36). W&L held its lead until the Royals took a 50-49 advantage with 8:13 remaining.

The Generals regained the lead and held it until a layup by freshman forward E.J. Arrington (Staunton, Va./Stuarts Draft) gave the Royals a 62-61 lead with 39 seconds remaining. W&L junior forward Scott Hettermann (Falls Church, Va./Landon) tied the game by hitting 1-of-2 free throws with 10 seconds remaining.

Stuart recorded 12 points in the overtime period, including a pair of three-pointers in the opening two minutes to give the Generals a six point lead that they would not relinquish.

W&L shot 55.3 percent (26-47) from the floor, but struggled from the free throw line where it was 14-of-31 (.452).

Hettermann scored 17 points and junior guard John Warren (Greenville, S.C./Wade Hampton) added 10 points for the Generals. Sophomore forward Hamill Jones (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) collected a career-high 12 rebounds.

Eastern Mennonite (3-9, 1-5) was paced by senior guard David Bell (Waynesboro, Va./Buffalo Gap), who totaled 27 points on 6-of-13 shooting from behind the arc. Sophomore center Michael Swartley (Harrisonburg, Va./Broadway) chipped in with 11 points and seven rebounds.

Washington and Lee will be in action again on Saturday afternoon as it hosts Lynchburg College for a 3:00 pm contest.
