SALEM, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's basketball team saw its five-game winning streak snapped as it fell to Roanoke, 71-62, in overtime on Sunday afternoon at the Bast Center.
The Generals, who were looking for their first win against the Maroons in 15 chances, held the lead on several occasions in the second half, however, neither team could manage a lead larger than three points in the final 15:48 of regulation. W&L trailed 59-57 until senior center Megan Babst (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) nailed a pair of free throws with 31 seconds remaining in regulation. RC junior guard Katrina Williams (Salem, Va./Glenvar) missed a layup with six seconds remaining and the teams headed to the extra frame.
Roanoke (7-6, 6-3) led the overtime from the start, outscoring the Generals, 12-3 in the period.
Washington and Lee (8-7, 6-5) was led by senior forward Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial), who tallied 25 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks. Babst notched 19 points, a game-high 12 rebounds and four blocks, while freshman forward Emily Barker (Clifton, Va./Mount Vernon) recorded 13 points and seven boards. Freshman guard Bethany Dannelly (Raleigh, N.C./Enloe) dished off 10 assists. She now holds the W&L season record for assists (86), breaking the record of 85 set last season by now senior guard Carter Thomas (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster).
Roanoke was led by Williams, who totaled 24 points and five steals. Senior center Crystal Barrett (Roanoke, Va./Northside) chipped in with 16 points and nine rebounds.
Washington and Lee will be in action again on Wednesday as it hosts Guilford for a 7:00 pm contest.
