LEXINGTON, Va. -- Freshman pitcher Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) tossed seven innings of three-hit ball and struck out seven batters to lead Washington and Lee to a 13-0 victory over Southern Virginia on Tuesday afternoon at Smith Field. Dean improved to 5-0 with the win.
The Generals (19-6) struck for five runs in the second inning as sophomore shortstop Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) and junior third baseman Matt Kozora (Ellicott City, Md./Glenelg) both doubled home a pair of runs. Freshman catcher Andrew Riffee (St. Albans, W.Va./Nitro) also picked up an RBI single.
In the fifth inning, Riffee stretched the W&L lead to 7-0 with a single to center field that scored sophomore first baseman Brian Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor) and freshman rightfielder Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville).
Washington and Lee tacked on four runs in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh to claim the 13-0 triumph.
Hanson led W&L by going 3-for-4 with two RBI and scored two runs. Mulhern also picked up three hits in five plate appearances and scored a pair of runs. Riffee went 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Kozora had two hits and two runs batted in. Southern Virginia (2-19) was out-hit by the Generals, 13-5.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday, April 14, as it hosts Virginia Wesleyan in a key ODAC doubleheader at 12:00 pm.
