LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee and Lynchburg split an ODAC doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in baseball action at Smith Field. The Hornets captured game one, 6-3, before the Generals fought back to salvage the split in game two, 5-3. The doubleheader split coupled with Eastern Mennonite and Virginia WesleyanÕs doubleheader split also on Saturday afternoon eliminates W&L from the ODAC Tournament.
In game one, Lynchburg scored two runs in the third inning as freshman second baseman Anthony Palmisano (Huddleston, Va./Staunton River) singled in sophomore centerfielder Nick Beyer (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) and junior leftfielder Joshua McCall (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) singled home Palmisano. The Hornets tacked on two more runs off senior pitcher David Sigler (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) in the fifth inning to take a 4-0 lead.
The game was then delayed for 1:15 due to rain in the bottom of the fifth. Following the delay, the Generals struck for a pair of runs as sophomore shortstop Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) hit a double to left field that scored both runs. W&L (23-8, 9-7) inched closer with a run in the bottom of the sixth and had the bases loaded with one out, however, sophomore reliever Dave Morris (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) got W&L sophomore second baseman Todd Johnson (Windsor Locks, Conn./Windsor Locks) to bounce into a double play to end the threat.
Lynchburg (22-14, 10-6) added two insurance runs in the seventh frame to clinch the three-run victory. Sophomore hurler Mike Ranson (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy) took the win for the Hornets, allowing three earned runs in 5 1/3 innings. Beyer came on in the ninth to pick up his second save of the season. Sigler was assessed the loss for Washington and Lee after tossing six innings and allowing six runs on nine hits.
In the nightcap, Hanson went the distance for the Generals, allowing two earned runs and four hits, while striking out six. He also did not allow a hit until the fifth inning.
Lynchburg scored an unearned run in the top of the first, but the Generals would plate two runs in the second and third innings and one in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead. The Hornets mounted a late comeback with runs in the sixth and seventh, but the Generals hung on for the 5-3 win.
Senior leftfielder Jason May (Houston, Texas/St. John's) led the way for the Generals in the second game by going 3-for-4 with one run scored. He finished the double-dip with five hits in seven at-bats with one RBI and one run scored. Johnson went 2-for-3 in game two with two RBI.
The Generals end their season at 23-8 overall, the most wins in school-history.
