HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Freshman pitcher Chris Flynn hit a two-run double down the right field line with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally Eastern Mennonite to a 4-3 victory over Washington and Lee in ODAC baseball action on Monday afternoon.
W&L led 3-1 heading into the sixth inning, however, with one out, senior first baseman Mike Gale doubled and junior catcher Erik Kratz reached on an error, advancing Gale to third base. Sophomore leftfielder Casey Severs scored Gale on a sacrifice fly to close the W&L lead to 3-2. Senior second baseman Mike Carpenter then drew a walk setting up Flynn's game-winning double.
Flynn was awarded the win after coming on in relief and hurling 1 1/3 perfect innings. Freshman starting pitcher Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) threw all six innings for Washington and Lee (18-6, 7-5), allowing four runs on six hits. All seven runs in the game were unearned.
The Generals took a 1-0 lead in the first frame as sophomore shortstop Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) hit a lead-off double and later scored on a throwing error.
W&L built a 3-0 lead in the second inning when Kagey knocked in sophomore second baseman Todd Johnson (Windsor Locks, Conn./Windsor Locks) and junior catcher Todd Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephens) with a single to right field.
EMU (14-10-1, 7-3) plated a run in the third inning when freshman centerfielder Tavis Laws singled to bring home Carpenter. The Royals closed out W&L with the three-run sixth inning to take the 4-3 victory.
Hanson went 2-for-4 for the Generals with a run scored, while Johnson picked up two hits and scored one run.
Washington and Lee returns to action tomorrow afternoon as it hosts Southern Virginia at Smith Field. The first pitch is set for 3:00 pm.
