LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee and Virginia Wesleyan split an ODAC doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in baseball action in Lexington, Va. The Generals captured game one, 8-1, behind senior hurler David Sigler's (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) complete game three-hitter, but junior pitcher Myron Trunick (Winston Salem, N.C./White Hall) fired a two-hit complete game in the nightcap to give the Blue Marlins a 6-1 victory.
In game one, W&L (20-7, 8-6) scored three unearned runs in the first inning off junior starter Jacob Bridges (Virginia Beach, Va./Midlothian) as sophomore shortstop Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) reached on an error and advanced to second on a single by junior third baseman Matt Kozora (Ellicott City, Md./Glenelg). Sophomore first baseman Brian Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor) then reached on an error that scored Hanson. Freshman rightfielder Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) brought home Kozora with an RBI single and Gladysz touched home after a single by junior catcher Todd Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephens).
In the second frame, freshman centerfielder Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston) drew a lead-off walk and scored on a two-out single by Kozora to give W&L a 4-0 lead. The Generals tacked on four more runs as Gosselink doubled home sophomore designated hitter Kyle Droppers (Dallas, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) and Hanson blasted a two-run triple to right center field. Freshman leftfielder Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) produced the Generals' final run with a sacrifice fly that scored Hanson.
Sigler improved to 6-1 by allowing only a solo home run by senior designated hitter Roger Carpenter (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River). He fanned six VWC batters. Gosselink went 2-for-2 with two RBI, while Hanson picked up two RBI and scored two runs.
Trunick hurled 5 2/3 innings of no-hit ball and allowed just a first-inning unearned run in leading Va. Wesleyan to the 6-1 win in game two. He also struck out 12 W&L batters.
The Blue Marlins (22-11, 12-2) plated one run in the first inning as junior first baseman Evan Spivey (Virginia Beach, Va./Nansemond River) singled to score senior second baseman Scott James (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Berea).
W&L tied the game in the bottom of the first as Kozora walked and scored on a wild pitch. VWC took control of the game in the third stanza with five runs off of Kagey. Senior catcher Jeb Wiseman (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill) produced a two-out, two-run double to break open the five-run inning for the Blue Marlins.
Spivey led VWC by going 2-for-4 with two RBI, while James singled twice and scored a pair of runs.
