W&L Shatters Records in 27-0 Victory over Ferrum

FERRUM, Va. -- Washington and Lee set school records for goals in a game and the largest margin of victory in a game in a 27-0 rout of Ferrum on Thursday afternoon in women's lacrosse action in Ferrum, Va.

The 27 goals broke the previous record set in a 24-5 victory over Hollins on Mar. 13, 1995, and a 24-4 win over Randolph-Macon Women's College on Apr. 23, 1993. The 27-goal margin also shattered the school mark for the largest margin of victory that was set on Mar. 19, 1997, with a 21-0 win over Hollins.

Senior attacker Liz Borges (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) led the way for the Generals by scoring six goals and adding three assists.

W&L (2-1) tallied three goals in the first 2:33 of the contest and cruised to an 18-0 halftime lead. W&L claimed eight players with two or more goals and 12 different Generals scored in the 27-goal victory.

Junior attacker Emily Owens (Waco, Texas/Episcopal) and freshmen midfielders Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) and Lee Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mauer) each tallied three goals. Owens and Taffe also added an assist. Sophomore attacker Leslie Bogart (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) notched two goals and assisted on three others.

Freshmen goalies Joanna Perini (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) and Annie Tompkins (Houston, Texas/The Kinkaid School) combined to make five saves to preserve their second shutout of the season. The Generals outshot Ferrum, 59-5.

Washington and Lee will return to action on Saturday afternoon as it hosts Randolph-Macon in an ODAC contest at 1:00 pm.
