Generals Win Seventh Straight With 7-0 Rout Of Southern Virginia

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee scored seven runs in the first three innings and cruised to its seventh-straight victory with a 7-0 win over Southern Virginia on Wednesday afternoon at Smith Field.

Freshman pitcher Mike Wert (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) allowed two hits over six innings to pick up his first collegiate victory.

In the first inning, junior third baseman Matt Kozora (Ellicott City, Md./Glenelg) singled home sophomore shortstop Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) and freshman centerfielder Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston) to give the Generals a 2-0 lead. Freshman catcher Andrew Riffee (St. Albans, W.Va./Nitro) then picked up an RBI when he grounded out to first base, scoring first baseman Brian Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor).

W&L (8-1) tacked on two runs in the second inning as Gladysz doubled home Allain and Kozora and Washington and Lee led 5-0. In the bottom of the third, Hanson singled to drive in sophomore second baseman Richard Campbell (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) and sophomore leftfielder Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) scored after Allain reached on an error.

Kozora went 2-for-3 with two RBI and scored one run. Gladysz also drove in a pair of runs, while Allain drew three walks and scored two runs.

Southern Virginia freshman starting pitcher Britt Jones (Glenside, Pa.) lasted just 1/3 of an inning, allowing three runs and three walks. Junior hurler Brandon Turley (Pleaseant Grove, Utah) threw 7 2/3 innings in relief and gave up four runs on three hits. SVC (2-10) committed three errors in the loss.

The Generals will return to action on Saturday afternoon as they travel to Greensboro, N.C., to take on Guilford in an ODAC doubleheader at 12:00 pm.
