W&L Women's Lacrosse Rallies to Top Denison, 11-6

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Washington and Lee rallied from a 5-1 first-half deficit to out-score Denison, 10-1, over the game's final 46 minutes and claimed an 11-6 victory in women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon in Granville, Ohio.

Denison jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with 23 minutes remaining in the first half, before junior attacker Emily Owens (Waco, Texas/Episcopal) sliced the lead in half with 17:49 to play in the first half off an assist from senior attacker Ellen Ritsch (Richmond, Va./Collegiate). However, the Big Red (2-2) posted three unanswered goals to take a 5-1 lead with 15 minutes left in the first half.

The Generals were able to cut the lead to 5-3 at halftime with late first-half goals by freshman midfielder Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) and senior attacker Liz Borges (Winchester, Mass./Winchester).

In the second half, W&L (8-2) exploded for eight goals starting at the 23:56 mark when Ritsch found the net off an assist from junior midfielder Courtenay Fisher (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest). Fisher then tied the game just 20 seconds later with an assist from freshman midfielder Lee Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr). Borges tallied her second goal of the game at the 21:47 mark to give W&L its first lead, 6-5.

The game was tightly contested over the next 14 minutes before junior midfielder Julie Carskadon (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) gave Washington and Lee a two-goal edge with 7:32 left to play. Owens tacked on a goal 51 seconds later to give W&L an 8-5 lead. Denison cut the lead to two on a goal by Amy Hemmellgarn 19 seconds later, but Ritsch, Taffe and sophomore attacker Leslie Bogart (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) all notched goals to close out the Big Red in the final four minutes.

Freshman goalie Joanna Perini (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) played a solid game in the net for the Generals by making 20 saves. Owens and Ritsch both tallied two goals and one assist, while Borges and Taffe each netted a pair of goals for W&L.

The Generals, ranked No. 17 in Division III, will return to action on Saturday, April 14, as they host Bridgewater in a 3:00 pm contest.
