Washington And Lee Outlasts Shenandoah, 4-3

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Freshman pitcher Mike Wert (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) allowed two earned runs and struck out seven batters to lead Washington and Lee to a 4-3 victory over Shenandoah on Wednesday afternoon at Smith Field.

Wert tossed all nine innings for his second-straight complete game and fourth win of the season.

W&L (17-5) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as sophomore shortstop Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) drew a lead-off walk, stole second base and scored on a single by sophomore first baseman Brian Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor).

The Hornets tied the game in the second inning as sophomore catcher Chris Zaia (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) scored sophomore first baseman Mike Gallagher (Springfield, Va./Hayfield) on a sacrifice fly.

The Generals would assume a 4-1 lead in the bottom half of the second as freshman centerfielder Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston), freshman leftfielder Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) and junior third baseman Matt Kozora (Ellicott City, Md./Glenelg) all produced RBI singles to force freshman starting pitcher J.R. Creamer (Lovettsville, Va./Loudon Valley) out of the game.

Shenandoah (11-10) responded with two runs in the third inning when sophomore shortstop Jake Fiedler (Fairfax, Va./Chantilly) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Gallagher singled to score senior centerfielder Tony Canterna (Linthicum, Md./Anne Arundel CC).

Junior reliever Chris Kees (Gore, Va./James Wood) held the Generals in check for the rest of the game, hurling 6 1/3 perfect innings. However, the Generals held on for the win as Wert allowed only three hits over the final six frames and struck out the side in the ninth to preserve the one-run victory.

W&L was led by Wert and Kozora, who extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a 2-for-4 day at the plate and drove in one run. Allain went 1-for-3 with an RBI and scored another run.

Washington and Lee will return to action on Saturday afternoon as it travels to Harrisonburg, Va., to take on Eastern Mennonite in an ODAC doubleheader at 12:00 pm.
