Bridgewater Baseball Scores Three In The Fifth To Defeat W&L, 4-1

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Bridgewater senior third baseman Matt Clatterbuck and sophomore leftfielder Scott Hearn belted back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the fifth to break a 1-1 tie and led Bridgewater to a 4-1 victory over Washington and Lee in ODAC baseball action on Tuesday afternoon in Bridgewater, Va.

W&L (16-5, 6-4 ODAC) out-hit the Eagles, 11-6, but stranded 13 runners on base.

Bridgewater started the scoring in the third inning as junior second baseman Jamie Lawhorne led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore centerfielder Brian Dewar. Lawhorne then scored on a passed ball and BC led 1-0.

The Generals tied the game in the fourth inning as sophomore shortstop Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) hit a bases-loaded single to drive in freshman rightfielder Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville).

Lawhorne started the rally for BC (14-7, 6-0 ODAC) in the fifth inning as he blooped a single into right field and scored on Clatterbuck's two-run shot to right center. Hearn then hit another homer to right center to give the Eagles the three-run lead.

Senior pitcher Gene Crawford came on in the eighth inning to pitch the final two frames to pick up his second save of the season.

Hanson led W&L at the plate by going 3-for-5 with one RBI. Sophomore first baseman Brian Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor), sophomore leftfielder Kyle Droppers (Dallas, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) and freshman centerfielder Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston) all collected two hits each.

Freshman hurler Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) threw all eight innings for W&L, allowing three earned runs on six hits. He also fanned six BC batters.

The Generals return home to Smith Field tomorrow afternoon against Shenandoah. The first pitch is set for 3:00 pm.
