Borges Leads W&L to a 13-1 ODAC Victory over Virginia Wesleyan

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior attacker Liz Borges (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) scored five first-half goals to lead Washington and Lee to a 13-1 victory over Virginia Wesleyan in ODAC women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon in Lexington, Va.

The Generals, ranked No. 20 in the latest IWLCA Division III poll, got on the board at the 28:51 mark as freshman midfielder Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) scored off a feed from freshman midfielder Lee Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr). Borges then tallied her first two goals of the game 2:24 apart to give W&L (5-1, 4-0) a 3-0 lead.

Wheeler then found the net at the 23:58 mark, followed by a goal by junior midfielder Courtenay Fisher (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest) and the Generals led 5-0 with 23:07 left in the first half. Borges would end the half with three consecutive goals and Washington and Lee held a 9-0 lead at the half. W&L outscored VWC, 4-1, in the second stanza to claim the 12-goal victory.

Freshman goalkeeper Joanna Perini (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) held the Blue Marlins (1-3, 1-1) at bay the entire afternoon by making 13 saves.

Washington and Lee was led by Borges and Fisher, who notched two goals and added one assist. Taffe and Wheeler each added one goal and two assists for the Generals.

W&L returns to action on Thursday afternoon as it travels to Salem, Va., to take on Roanoke College at 4:00 pm.
