Johnson And Mulhern Blast Homers To Lead Generals To 7-2 Win

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore second baseman Todd Johnson (Windsor Locks, Conn./Windsor Locks) hit a two-run homer and freshman rightfielder Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) clubbed a three-run shot to lead Washington and Lee to a 7-2 victory over Westminster (Pa.) on Wednesday afternoon at Smith Field.

Mulhern went 3-for-4, scoring a pair of runs, while Johnson went 2-for-3 with three RBI.

Freshman pitcher Mike Wert (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) picked up his second consecutive victory for W&L (11-2), allowing one unearned run on two hits.

The Generals got on the board in the second inning as Johnson singled to left field to score junior catcher Todd Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. StephenÕs), who reached on a walk.

The Titans (0-4-1) tied the game in the third inning as sophomore catcher Scott Nastase (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) doubled with two outs and was moved to third on an error. Nastase then scored after a passed ball to tie the game, 1-1.

Following a single by Mulhern with one out in the fourth stanza, Johnson put Washington and Lee ahead with his two-run homer over the left field wall.

The Generals added four insurance runs in the fifth inning as sophomore designated hitter Kyle Droppers (Dallas, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) singled home freshman centerfielder Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston) and Mulhern brought home three runs with his blast to left field and W&L led 7-1.

Westminster added a late run in the eighth inning, but sophomore pitcher Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Aacdemy) came on to shut the door on the Titans in the ninth to preserve the five-run victory.

The Generals will return to action on Saturday afternoon as they host Hampden-Sydney in an ODAC doubleheader at 1:00 pm.
