Generals Defeat Mary Washington, 7-4

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Junior third baseman Matt Kozora (Ellicott City, Md./Glenelg) went 3-for-5, scored two runs and drove in another to lead Washington and Lee to a 7-4 victory over Mary Washington in baseball action on Tuesday afternoon.

W&L (10-2) scored two runs in the top of the first inning as sophomore first baseman Brian Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor) singled in sophomore shortstop Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) and sophomore leftfielder Kyle Droppers (Dallas, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) singled to left field to score Kozora.

Mary Washington fought back to take the lead in the bottom half of the first as shortstop Mark McEathron led off the game with a double and scored on an error by Droppers. Third baseman Erik Dorman singled in a run and rightfielder Drew Robertson grounded out to first to drive in another run off freshman starter Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) and MWC led 3-2 after one stanza.

The Eagles (8-3) plated another run in the third inning to take a 4-2 lead, however, W&L exploded for five runs in the fifth inning to take the lead for good.

Kozora and Gladysz led off the inning with back-to-back singles and Droppers singled two batters later to load the bases with one out. Kozora brought the Generals to within one run after he scored on a wild pitch. Freshman rightfielder Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) tied the game at four with a sacrifice fly that scored Gladysz. After a walk, Droppers scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch by relief pitcher Reed Shabman. Freshman designated hitter Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) then singled down the right field line to score sophomore second baseman Todd Johnson (Windsor Locks, Conn./Windsor Locks) to give Washington and Lee a two-run lead. Kozora singled for the second time in the inning to knock in Kagey to round out the five-run rally.

Dean improved to 3-0 on the year by throwing 5 1/3 innings, giving up four runs on six hits. Kagey came on in relief to pick up his first save of the season, allowing just one hit over 3 2/3 innings.

W&L returns to action tomorrow afternoon as it hosts Westminster (Pa.) at 3:00 pm in Lexington.
