W&L Baseball Splits ODAC Doubleheader With Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Washington and Lee split an ODAC doubleheader with Guilford College on Saturday afternoon in Greensboro, N.C. The Generals won their eighth consecutive game with a 6-3 win in game one, before dropping a 12-3 decision to the Quakers in game two.

In game one, senior hurler David Sigler (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) threw his third complete game of the year, allowing two earned runs and eight hits in seven innings to pick up his third victory of the season.

Sophomore designated hitter Kyle Droppers (Dallas, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) led the way for the Generals by going 2-for-4 with one RBI and scored another run. W&L plated four runs in the third inning to take a 5-3 lead and Sigler shut down the Quakers over the final four stanzas to claim the 6-3 win.

In game two, sophomore shortstop Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) led off the game with a home run and the Generals held 2-0 and 3-2 leads, but Guilford (7-6, 1-1 ODAC) took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth and then tacked on eight insurance runs in the sixth innings to take the nine-run victory.

Freshman pitcher Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) was handed his first loss of the season as he surrendered six runs and nine hits over five innings.

In the loss, Hanson and junior catcher Todd Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephens) each collected two hits in three plate appearances and scored a run.

The Generals (9-2, 3-1 ODAC) return to action on Wednesday afternoon as they will host Westminster (Pa.) at 3:00 pm.
