LEXINGTON, Va. -- Eastern Mennonite sophomore guard Emily Mullet (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) scored an ODAC-record 58 points and tied her own ODAC record with 10 three point field goals, but it was not enough as Washington and Lee defeated Eastern Mennonite, 80-69, in ODAC women's basketball action on Wednesday evening in Lexington, Va.
W&L junior forward Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) scored a school-record 37 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Generals to the 11-point victory.
The Generals jumped out to an early 16-7 lead over the game's first 7:21 and led at the half, 35-27. Mentz tallied 14 first-half points, while Mullet accumulated 23 of the Royals' 27 points in the half.
W&L (7-12, 5-10) stretched the lead to as many as 20 points, 60-40, with 8:14 left in the contest only to see the Royals (3-17, 1-15) storm back with a 18-4 run over the next 4:33 to cut the lead to 64-58. Mullet drilled three treys in the 14-point run.
Washington and Lee sealed the victory by hitting 10-of-12 free throws in the final 2:18.
Mullet's 58 points marked the second-highest individual point total in Division III history, falling three points shy of the 61 points scored by Ann Gilbert of Oberlin in 1991. She also added eight rebounds.
The Generals were led by Mentz's record-setting performance as she connected on 13-of-19 shots from the floor and 11-of-13 free throw attempts. She also added five assists and three steals. Junior center Megan Babst (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) posted her 14th double-double of the season with 20 points, 17 rebounds and four blocks. Junior forward Sarah Schmidt (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) chipped in with 12 points, while junior guard Carter Thomas (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) dished out a game-high nine assists.
Washington and Lee will return to action on Saturday afternoon as it entertains Randolph-Macon at 2:00 pm.
