LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore center Lane Brooks (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland) scored a career-high 22 points on 8-of-9 shooting to help lead Hampden-Sydney past Washington and Lee, 66-60, in ODAC men's basketball action.
Trailing by five points (31-26) at the half, the Generals (3-17, 3-12) held a 41-39 lead until Brooks tied the game on a layup with 7:48 remaining in the contest. The Tigers (18-2, 12-2) stretched their lead to 45-41 on another Brooks layup with 4:48 remaining. Just 41 seconds later, however, W&L freshman center David Bode (Raleigh, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) was whistled for an offensive foul, his fifth foul of the game, and also received a technical foul. The Tigers sank all four free throws to push their advantage to eight points (49-41) and held on for the six-point win.
Brooks was the only player in double figures for the Tigers, who outrebounded the Generals, 33-23, and shot 35 free throws, making 25 of them. Junior forward Bobby Jackson (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook) tallied eight points as did senior guard Kevin Swann (Richmond, Va./James River). The Tigers shot just 37.3 percent (19-51) from the floor.
Washington and Lee was led by senior guard Will Ballard (Elkin, N.C./Elkin), who scored a season-high 20 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the floor. Ballard also collected six rebounds, two assists, three steals and one block. Sophomore forward Jake McAlister (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) tied a career-high with eight points. W&L shot a season-high 52.4 percent (22-42) from the floor, but committed 26 turnovers in the game.
The Generals will be in action again on Sunday afternoon as they host Lynchburg for a 3:00 pm contest.
